Paver Calculator

A paver patio costs $8.00 to $20 per sq ft installed, with most landing at $12 to $15 per sq ft. A typical 12 ft × 12 ft patio (144 sq ft) runs $1,700 to $2,200 installed, or $600 to $1,150 in materials if you lay it yourself. Use the calculator to get paver count, sand, gravel, and total cost for your patio.

Paver patio installation cost

A paver patio has three material layers and the labor to install them. The pavers themselves run $2.00 to $8.00 per sq ft depending on material: concrete pavers at the low end, natural stone and brick at the top. Underneath go a 4 in to 6 in compacted crushed-stone base and a 1 in layer of bedding sand, which together add another $1 to $3 per square foot. Professional installation adds $4.00 to $10 per sq ft of labor, bringing the total to $8.00 to $20 per sq ft installed. Excavation, grading, and edging restraints are usually included; a concrete border or steps cost extra.

How the calculator works

Area is length × width per section, summed, plus your waste allowance (5 to 10 percent covers cuts at edges; use more for diagonal or herringbone patterns). Paver count is area ÷ one paver’s face area (from its inch dimensions), rounded up. Bedding sand is a 1 in layer over the area; the gravel base is 4 in of compacted crushed stone, converted to cubic yards and tons (the base is most of the weight you’ll order). Cost is quantities times your local rates, with labor priced per square foot the way contractors quote it. Price ranges reflect published US averages from national cost guides (Angi, HomeGuide, HomeAdvisor, 2026).

Paver patio cost FAQ

How much does a paver patio cost?

A paver patio costs $8.00 to $20 per sq ft installed, with most homeowners paying $12 to $15 per sq ft. A typical 12 ft by 12 ft patio (144 sq ft) runs $1,700 to $2,200 installed, or $600 to $1,150 in materials if you lay the pavers yourself. Concrete pavers sit at the low end, natural stone and brick at the high end.

How many pavers do I need?

Divide your patio area in square feet by one paver’s face area. A 4 in by 8 in paver covers about 0.22 sq ft, so a 144 sq ft patio needs about 655 pavers before waste. Add 5 to 10 percent extra for cuts at edges, and 15 percent or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

How much sand and gravel do I need under pavers?

A standard paver base is 4 in to 6 in of compacted crushed stone topped by 1 in of bedding sand. A 144 sq ft patio needs roughly 2 cubic yards (about 2.7 tons) of base gravel and half a cubic yard of sand. The base carries the load; the sand bed levels the pavers.

Is it cheaper to lay pavers yourself?

Yes. Labor is roughly half the installed price. DIY materials for a 144 sq ft patio run $600 to $1,150, versus $1,700 to $2,200 installed. The trade-off is the digging and compaction: a solid base means excavating, hauling, and tamping several tons of gravel, plus renting a plate compactor.
