How the calculators work
Every tool answers one question: what does this specific project cost? You enter the dimensions of the job. The calculator works out the material quantities (square feet of wall, cubic yards of gravel, tons of hot-mix), multiplies them by unit rates, and shows both a do-it-yourself materials total and a professionally installed total. Every rate is editable, so you can swap a national average for a real number from a local quote and the math updates instantly. Nothing you type is sent anywhere; all of it runs in your browser.
Where the numbers come from
Default rates are US national averages compiled from published cost guides, including Angi, HomeGuide, HomeAdvisor, and Homewyse, and they are reviewed when the tools are updated. They are a starting point, not a quote, because real prices move with region, site access, and season. The full breakdown of sources, ranges, and review dates is on the cost data & sources page, and you can read more about how the site works on the about page.
